India’s current population is 1.39 billion and numbers are increasing continually. After China, India is the most populated country in the world. However, China has decent control over its population and it is dropping gradually over the years. Whereas in India, the situation is entirely different. Every year India’s population is continually increasing. Overpopulation will lead to many problems both economically and environmentally if not controlled. Overpopulation will become a great hindrance for India’s growth, otherwise it could lead to devastating situations.
Increase in Deforestation
Overpopulation requires more land to accommodate and meet everyone’s needs. To accommodate the increasing population, we need more cities, towns and more free space. For this, day by day deforestation rate is continuously rising. Because of deforestation, we can accommodate the increasing population. If the deforestation rate increases more than a particular rate, then it could lead to many other devastating consequences. Consequences like improper rain cycles, soil erosion, and floods, etc.
Water scarcity
Right now, water is the most scarce resource. Still, many villages and areas are not getting fresh drinkable water. Though a major portion of our planet has water, it is not drinkable water. Only 2.5 of that water is drinkable. So overpopulation will increase the competition for water resources. If the population increase rate continues like this, then it is impossible to supply water for everyone. India has already recognized that we are running out of water resources. In addition, there is no proper water supply to many regions, which is expected to skyrocket by 2030.
Global Warming
The environment is the first thing that pays a heavy price for human doings. Overpopulation will increase the number of industries and automobile usage. Not only this, but overpopulation also demands more oil, gas, and other energy resources. To fulfill everyone’s necessities, natural resources may not be sufficient in the future. We may even overuse the current resources which will inevitably increase air pollution and other pollutants in nature. As a result, global warming increases. Which could heat the earth’s surface and many also disturb its ability to support plants and even human beings.
Animal Extinction
To accommodate overpopulation we are taking down forests which is the natural habitat for many wild animals. Many animals lost their natural habitat and ended up looking for new territories. As a result, they are marching to unknown places thus increasing the number of accidents and being prey for hunters. Also, many scientists already warned us that if the population growth rate follows at the same rate, then there is a chance that 50% of wildlife species will be at risk of extinction.
So Overpopulation is undoubtedly the next big crisis India will face. However, there are many reasons for this increment in population over the years. One of them is poverty and illiteracy are major reasons for this unawareness. There is no awareness among certain communities in India. Recently the UP government made some changes and released a new population policy.
The UP government even said that it will provide incentives for people who will help in population control. The main objective of this new policy is to increase awareness among people and encourage them to keep the population in check.
